Roswell Fire Chief Devin Graham on May 24 presented a plaque to Ms. Rosalinda Gallo, a third-grader at Pecos Elementary School, in recognition of her quick actions to help her younger brother to safety during a fire at the family’s house in February.
It was 6:45 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22, when RFD was called to the house fire in the 1500 block of Monroe Avenue. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly.
Rosalinda, her brother Alexander, and aunt Nikita Valderez were asleep in the house when the fire started. They awoke to heavy smoke. Ms. Valderez and Rosalinda got out of the house and realized Alexander was still inside. Rosalinda went back into the house and was able to rescue Alexander by bringing him outside to safety.
Chief Graham, joined by other members of the fire department, presented the RFD award to Rosalinda during the year-end awards assembly at Pecos Elementary. Character Counts! in Chaves County also recognized Rosalinda’s actions by sending a medal and certificate that were given to her during the assembly.
