Fireworks will light up the sky and music will fill the air on the Fourth of July as Roswell celebrates America’s Independence Day with the Roswell SERTOMA Club’s Mike Satterfield Memorial 20th Annual Fireworks Extravaganza sponsored by the Roswell SERTOMA Club and the City of Roswell.
The Fourth of July event at Cielo Grande Recreation Area (1612 W. College Blvd.) takes place from 6 to 10 p.m. thanks to the work of the SERTOMA Club – a local community service organization – with the assistance of The City of Roswell.
The 30-minute fireworks display will begin about 9:15 p.m. and will feature patriotic music simulcast on HOT 97.1 FM.
The free extravanganza gets underway at 6 p.m. with plenty of jolly jumps and a trackless train for the kids, as well as local food vendors. At 6:15 p.m, the pre-fireworks happenings will begin with Roswell-raised Kristine Mirelle taking the stage at 6:15 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., the festivities will be headlined by a performance by The Swon Brothers, a country-music duo from Oklahoma who rose to notoriety in 2013 on television’s “The Voice.”
Other sponsors of the event are the Holiday Inn and Oasis restaurant, Chef Toddzilla’s Gourmet Burgers, Antigua Cocina Mexicana, Hot 97 KBCQ, 104.7 KMOU, and Lots of Laughs, LLC.
Just north of Cielo Grande at Elks Lodge #969 (1720 N. Montana Ave.), veterans are invited to a free barbecue the lodge will host for them and their families from 4 to 7 p.m. that day.
The Roswell SERTOMA Club’s Mike Satterfield Memorial 20th Annual Fireworks Extravaganza honors the late SERTOMA Club member who was among the group that revived Roswell’s Fourth of July fireworks show in 1997 with the SERTOMA Club as the main funding supporter. Satterfield was instrumental in securing the firing equipment and enabling Roswell Fire Department personnel to get trained and licensed in shooting pyrotechnics. The RFD personnel continue to fill the specialized roles of setting up and firing off the show each year.

West College Boulevard adjacent to Cielo Grande Recreation Area will be closed during the fireworks show. To avoid parking complications, people are asked to arrive early. It is also recommended spectators bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on. For safety reasons, people should not bring their own fireworks, and should not bring pets.
As motorists leave the area following the fireworks show, they are asked to be aware of and follow the directions of signs and police officers directing traffic as various streets will be closed and detours will be in place to create a traffic flow that will allow people to most efficiently exit the area.
