A major bridge-replacement project will require the closure of a portion of North Garden Avenue beginning Monday (Jan. 27).
North Garden will be closed to through traffic from Cherry Street to Petro Drive. The North Garden bridge located south of Petro Drive will be removed and reconstructed. The existing 1960s-era bridge is structurally deficient and bridge inspections recommended it be replaced. A new culvert and bridge will be constructed. The new bridge will be wider than the one it is replacing and will include sidewalk and bridge railing for pedestrian use.
The cost of the project is about $1 million. It has been fully funded within the city budget.
The affected section of North Garden is estimated to be closed until around July 1. Motorists are asked to seek alternate routes. As the bridge construction begins, crews will set up a full complement of detour signage to assist access to impacted businesses. Business operators and residents of the area with questions can call City Engineer Louis Najar at (575) 910-6477.
