What must I do if I am involved in a motor-vehicle accident?
After the accident, you must immediately stop your vehicle. If possible, try to position your vehicle in a place that causes the least obstruction to other motorists. You must give your name, address, and registration number to the others involved in the accident. If requested, you must show your driver's license. If someone is injured, you must give "reasonable assistance" to the victim, which can include either calling for emergency help or taking the injured to receive medical care.
Depending on the circumstances and seriousness of the accident, you and other drivers involved may choose to exchange needed information and go on your ways without calling police. If you do that, you must then pursue any matters related to the accident through civil court rather than criminally. You cannot file a police report later.
However, state law says an accident “resulting in bodily injury to or death of any person or property damage to an apparent extent of five hundred dollars ($500) or more” must be immediately reported to appropriate law enforcement. In most cases, regardless of the seriousness of the accident, it is recommended to request police come to the scene to record information (whether in a formal report or not) so the information can be later referenced from an official source if necessary.
If you accidentally damage an unoccupied vehicle while you are driving, you must attach a note to the damaged vehicle. List your name and address, as well as the owner's name and address of the vehicle you're driving (if it's not your vehicle). Make sure to write legibly, include a description of what happened, and affix the note to the vehicle in a secure and conspicuous location.
