Definition and Distinguishing Characteristics
This is routine work in a variety of manual labor and semi-skilled work assignments. Work involves the performance of routine tasks and assisting a full-functioning employee in work areas as assigned.
Work is normally performed on a temporary or seasonal basis. Work involves no decision-making responsibilities and is usually performed under close supervision, with employee receiving specific instructions as to what is expected.
Typical Examples of Work Performed
May participate in mowing grass, trimming shrubs and trees, cutting weeds, digging and refilling ditches and holes and other grounds maintenance tasks.
Loads and unloads materials and equipment. Assists in setting up job sites and cleans up job sites when job is completed.
May perform maintenance and custodial tasks, such as washing vehicles, washing windows, sweeping and mopping floors, etc.
Cleans grounds areas of paper, trash and other debris.
Uses a variety of hand tools, such as pick and shovel and may use some power equipment and tools, such as powered lawn mowers, string weed trimmers, tampers and similar tools and equipment.
May drive City vehicles.

Definition and Distinguishing Characteristics
This is entry-level, general duty, police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Work involves the prevention of juvenile and adult crime, apprehension of law violators, direction of traffic, general enforcement of laws and ordinances and preliminary and follow-up investigation of crimes.
Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations and upon specific oral and written instructions from a superior. While many decisions are limited by established procedure, independent judgment, usually based on precedent, must be exercised in the handling of specific cases. Some of the work actions are final and represent the last level of responsibility, but many are reviewed or reconsidered internally or by the judicial system before being considered final. Work of this class involves many actions which, if improperly performed, would cause serious consequences for the safety of public and property. Definition and Distinguishing Characteristics
This is semi-skilled lead work in maintaining landscaped areas on a golf course or other designated landscaped area. Work involves direct participation in the performance of semi-skilled manual tasks in maintaining landscaped areas, recreation equipment and operating light automotive equipment.
Work is performed in accordance with established routines, with the employees expected to make field decisions based upon the knowledge of these procedures and upon on-the-job experience. The major responsibility of the work in this class is the ongoing safety of the job and performing the more difficult and advanced semi-skilled tasks. The work requires knowledges that can be learned on-the-job but only with considerable experience and supervisory input. Employees do not exercise full supervisory responsibility but do exercise lead worker responsibility at the job site. Work originates from specific work assignments from a superior and is reviewed by periodic on-site observation.

Directs subordinates in the installation of extensive sprinkler systems for the irrigation of parks, golf courses and other landscaped areas.

This is responsible emergency radio dispatching work. Work involves receiving requests for emergency police, fire and medical services and dispatching appropriate units in accordance with preestablished criteria.
Work is performed in accordance with the standard operating procedures of the police communication unit with the employees expected to exercise some independent judgment in handling specific cases but with unusual or difficult problems being referred to supervisory personnel on duty in the emergency service involved. Definition and Distinguishing Characteristics
This is semi-skilled work in the maintenance and construction of water lines and sanitary sewers. Work involves performing semi-skilled manual tasks, locating and repairing leaks in water lines and sewers, making taps into the lines, and constructing new extensions.
Work is performed in accordance with established routines and procedures with some very limited judgments being made by the employees based on experience. Major maintenance decisions or construction decisions are referred to a supervisor. The work requires knowledges that can be readily learned on the job. Employees do not exercise full supervisory responsibility, although they may direct Laborer I and II positions on certain projects. Work is reviewed primarily through on-site observation.
Typical Examples of Work Performed
Excavates with shovels, picks and other hand tools around water lines and sewer lines in order to expose problem area.
Repairs water lines by using leak clamps or standard techniques and repairs broken sewers by replacing sections or patching.
Makes water taps using tapping machines of various sizes, sets corporations, sets meters and hooks up to property owner's service line.
Makes sewer taps using hammer and chisel to open hole in sewer pipe, sets new pipe into hole and recements hookup.
Builds manholes, unstops sewer lines, repairs leaks in fire hydrants, cleans out drain plugs of fire hydrants and extends or raises hydrants.
May operate dump trucks and small backhoe and front-end loading equipment as required.
Operates high pressure sewer cleaning equipment, operates sewer rodding machines, may manually dig out manholes to unstop sewers.
May be required to wear and use a respirator.
May drive City vehicles.

Definition and Distinguishing Characteristics
This is semi-skilled lead work in the maintenance and construction of water lines and sanitary sewers. Work involves directing and performing semi-skilled manual tasks in location and repairing leaks in water lines and sewers, making taps into the lines and constructing new extensions under supervision.
Work is performed in accordance with established routines, with employees expected to make field operating decisions based upon those routines and referring unusual occurrences to a higher-level superior for decisions. The major responsibility of the work of this class is for the ongoing safety of the job site and being responsible for safe working conditions of subordinates. The work requires knowledges that can be learned on-the-job but only with supervisory input. Employees do not exercise full supervisory responsibility but do exercise lead worker responsibility at the job site. Definition and Distinguishing Characteristics
This is equipment operation work of some responsibility in the maintenance of a sanitary landfill Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of heavy automotive construction equipment in the pushing and packing of refuse and fill material. Work extends to responsibility for on-site equipment preventive maintenance.
Work is performed in accordance with safe automotive construction operation procedures and departmental landfill policies. Employees make few independent decisions and exercise no supervisory responsibility. Close direction is received from a lead worker, and general supervision is received from the management of the Sanitation Department. Work originates from the ongoing need of opening new dumping areas and covering up and compacting work areas as they are being filled. Work involves an element of personal discomfort due to the nature of the material being deposited at the landfill.

Definition and Distinguishing Characteristics
This is entry-level general duty firefighting work in the protection of life and property by preventing, combating and extinguishing fire. Work primarily involves the manipulation of specialized firefighting and EMS tools and equipment.
Work is performed in accordance with departmental policies and procedures and established firefighting practices. Decisions made are generally limited by established procedure, but the work may involve exercise of judgment in the methods or techniques used at Fire Department incidents. The work requires knowledge that is to be learned on-the-job, both through a formal training program and with considerable supervisory participation. Close supervision is received with technical direction and guidance. Work originates from specific oral assignments from a superior, both at the incident and in stationhouse duties. Work is reviewed primarily by observation from a superior. Work may involve some contact with the general public that requires courtesy and tact. Work requires performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may involve extreme physical exertion under such handicaps as smoke, height, heat and cramped surroundings. Work is performed on 24-hour shifts and employees sleep nights when not responding to alarms.

Responds to fire alarms with a fire company, connects hose, holds nozzle and directs water stream, raises and climbs ladders.
Removes persons from danger, administers emergency medical aid to injured persons.
Forces entry of premises for firefighting and rescue operations, uses chemical fire extinguishers, axes, claw tools, ceiling hooks and other equipment and tools.
Makes openings in buildings for ventilation; performs salvage and overhaul operations.
Performs routine maintenance work in the upkeep of Fire Department property and equipment; washes, dries and changes hoses.
