Members of the Roswell Police Department SWAT Team competed in October in the Texas Tactical Police Officers Association's SWAT competition in Conroe, Texas. Participating in the Oct. 7-10 event were 33 teams from Texas, Florida, Louisiana and Wisconsin, along with RPD being the only department from New Mexico, and the second smallest department, competing in the competition.
The competition consisted of eight events over the four days with most events focusing on physical fitness and shooting skills. The Roswell SWAT Team finished ninth overall, beating teams from some much larger departments such as El Paso and Waco in Texas, Orange County, Fla., and Lafayette, La. RPD placed in the top 10 in the individual events of Officer Down, Jungle Run and Rocky’s Run (a course dedicated to a fallen officer).
The Roswell SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) members who attended this competition are Scott Wrenn, Trong Nguyen, Randy Rodriquez, Mark Meraz, Ryan Craine, Brandon Stroud and Nars Santillan. The RPD team won a tactical “break-and-rake” tool, which is used to make entry into structures through windows, and a ballistic shield.
