[ARCHIVED] Man arrested after explosive materials found at house

investigation 2 (website)

A Roswell man was arrested June 7 in connection with a homemade explosive device and other potential bomb-making materials found inside his house.

David Harris, 52, is charged with possession of explosives. He was booked into the Chaves County Detention Center.

RPD detectives were executing a search warrant the morning of June 7 at the residence in the 900 block of North Washington Avenue in reference to an ongoing investigation. Unrelated to that investigation, detectives carrying out the search discovered what appeared to be possible explosive materials inside the house.

The New Mexico State Police bomb unit was called in from Albuquerque. Those specialists arrived at the Roswell scene shortly before 2 p.m. A search warrant allowing them to enter the residence to investigate the possible explosive materials was obtained. The 900 block of North Washington was closed for several hours during the investigation.

Harris was at the house and had been detained by RPD when the original search warrant was served that morning. He was arrested that evening following investigation of the materials inside the house.

The State Police bomb unit took steps to render safe explosives found in the house. Investigation at the scene wrapped up about 8:30 p.m. The street was reopened earlier in the evening.
