As the project to renovate and expand the Roswell Convention and Civic Center gets underway in late 2017 and continues into 2018, City of Roswell officials will also be reviewing the options for how the facility is managed and operated.
With the exception of the city’s tourism and event manager, the Convention and Civic Center has been staffed by employees who are provided by a local private employment agency and are classified as temporary personnel. Those eight staff members were recently informed their city assignments – made through the employment agency that originally placed them in the city positions for an unspecified amount of time – will be ending Dec. 31, 2017, as the convention center will close from Jan. 1, 2018, until at least July 8, 2018, as the renovation and expansion work takes place.
The city has thanked the convention center staff for their time and dedication as they have provided a high level of service to the city and the groups and other organizers that have used the convention center for a wide variety of events. The city’s Human Resources Department has informed the convention center staff of other city positions – both permanent and temporary – for which they can apply, and will continue to offer assistance in that process to those who desire it.
During the initial work for the expansion portion of the project, the convention center will still be in operation. Once the renovation of the existing building begins in January, the facility will be closed until the completion of the project. As such, no reservations are being taken at this time for new events at the center in 2018.
As the physical structure of the convention center is renewed, city officials will be considering how the renovated and expanded facility will be staffed and managed. Options include hiring temporary employees through an outside agency like has been done in the past, hiring staff who would be employed as regular city employees, or hiring a combination of those two types of employees. Another option would be to contract with an outside entity to manage the convention center, in which case, that contractor would do the staff hiring. There may be additional options that are determined and explored as the process moves forward.
