A local man died shortly after he was shot multiple times during a domestic dispute around midday Jan. 5. The alleged shooter was arrested and charged with manslaughter after he turned himself in at the police station later that afternoon.
Following the shooting shortly before noon, the 37-year-old victim, Milton Wayne Hopkins, was transported by medics to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In the late afternoon, the suspect, Ja-hmariay Quentell McDavid, 19, of Roswell, showed up at the Roswell Police Department accompanied by family members. Investigators questioned him and he was then arrested and booked into the Chaves County Detention Center on the charge of voluntary manslaughter.
The shooting took place inside a house in the 200 block of West Mathews Street. The domestic dispute that ended in the shooting involved relatives and boyfriends and girlfriends. A resident of the house called 911 at about 11:50 a.m. to report the shooting. Responding police obtained the name and description of the shooter and began searching for him, but did not locate him.
