[ARCHIVED] Library lands grant for technology-learning opportunities for youth

Big News for STEM at the Roswell Public Library

Roswell, N.M. — The Roswell Public Library will soon be offering new opportunities for local youth to learn and get hands-on experience with the latest technologies and apps thanks to funding the library recently was awarded through the STEM Innovation Grant provided by the New Mexico Library Foundation.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Children’s Librarian Claire Gutierrez applied for the grant in November.

Through the grant of close to $4,000, the library will be obtaining iPads and iPad stations that will be loaded with STEM-related apps geared to many ages and related to a variety of interests. Several of these iPads will be available and accessible for use for out-of-school learning within the library.

They will be used during upcoming Coding workshops during Teen Tech Week (March 6-10) and Stop-Motion Animation workshops during Spring Break week (April 2-7). Coding is the development of computer languages that make it possible to create apps, games, websites and other computer software. These programs are intended for children and teens ages 10-18. Stop-motion animation is the use of individual pictures to create a scene or figure that appears to be animated. These programs are for youth ages 6 and older.

Additional STEM-related programs, clubs and workshops will be conducted in the future using the iPads, which will be located in the Children’s Area of the library. The apps that will be available on the iPads are designed for use and learning by youth from preschool through high school. For information about upcoming programs, call the library at (575) 622-7101 or go online to http://roswell-nm.gov/413/Programs.

By providing free and accessible tools and programs for Roswell’s K-12 students, the Roswell Public Library hopes to inspire young minds to be creative, innovative and always seeking knowledge.
