Who would have thought tissue boxes, magazines, towels and pinecones could be so much fun? When things such as those are put into the hands, oh, make that paws and claws, of animals at the Spring River Park and Zoo, they do indeed provide plenty of creature fun, as well as a means for mental and physical stimulation and exercise for these animals.
The zoo is always seeking donations of disposable “enrichment” items that are used for the animals’ benefit. People can drop off items at the zoo office. The zoo is located at the corner of East College Boulevard and North Atkinson Avenue.
Most acceptable items must be made of cardboard or paper. There are a few exceptions, which are included in this list of examples of acceptable items:
- Paper bags (all sizes and colors)
- Cardboard boxes (all sizes)
- Cereal boxes
- Tissue boxes
- Cardboard tubes (paper towel, toilet paper, wrapping paper, etc.)
- Pinecones (natural only)
- Cotton blankets and sheets
Items that are not acceptable include plastic bottles, bottle tops, aluminum or tin cans, plastic bags and Styrofoam. When donating acceptable items, please remove all tape, staples and other fasteners from boxes, magazines and other items that may contain those things.
For more information about donating items for the animals’ enrichment, call the zoo at (575) 624-6760.
