A man has been charged with murder in the late-night shooting death of a local man June 27 outside a residence in south Roswell.
Jesus Arreola, 35, was taken into custody shortly after the shooting that occurred in the 1100 block of South Kentucky Avenue. Arreola, who is from Portales but has been living in Roswell recently, is charged with second-degree murder.
Roswell Police Department officers were called to the scene about 11:35 p.m. and found the shooting victim, Johnny L. Fleming, 32, of Roswell, lying in the front yard of his residence. He had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported by medics to a local hospital where he later died.
Very quickly after the shooting, Arreola was located alone in a car parked outside the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office on St. Mary’s Place, several blocks from the South Kentucky Avenue shooting location. Arreola was on the phone with a dispatcher and then an RPD sergeant while remaining in the car as RPD officers and sheriff’s deputies were positioned nearby around the car. An RPD officer could see Arreola was holding a gun while inside the car. After about 20 minutes, Arreola exited the car, leaving the gun inside, and surrendered without further incident.
