[ARCHIVED] Public’s help sought to name zoo’s new longhorns

young longhorns at zoo (Nov 2018)

Two of the newest additions to the Spring River Park and Zoo are in need of names. The zoo is asking for suggestions from the public in order to select monikers for its pair of 1-year-old longhorn cattle.

People should submit their name suggestions online. The name suggestions for these young male longhorns are being accepted until Dec. 27. The final selection of the names will be made by the zookeepers from among the suggestions submitted online. The winning names will be announced New Year’s Day. The citizens who come up with the names that are selected will each receive a prize that is still being determined.

These two longhorns, originally from Texas, were purchased from the Roswell Livestock Auction yard by Friends of the Spring River Zoo. The purpose of purchasing them for the zoo was to provide the zoo’s older longhorn, Geronimo, with some company. The three longhorns are sharing a pen and have been doing well together.

Zoo staff and Friends of the Spring River Zoo invite the public to join them at the longhorn exhibit Saturday (Dec. 1) at 10:45 a.m. for the official kickoff of the naming process as part of the first day of the zoo’s “25 Days of Zoo Christmas” during which the zoo animals will be receiving gifts throughout December. The Friends group members will be serving candy canes and hot cocoa Saturday.
