One man was arrested several hours after a weekend shooting and the investigation is continuing into the incident that occurred in the early morning hours of Jan. 6 at a local residence where numerous people had gathered for a party. Investigators are also asking for the public’s help to identify other suspects who may have been involved in the shooting.
Roswell Police Department officers were initially called to the area of West College Boulevard and Montana Avenue about 2:10 a.m. that Sunday (Jan. 6) in reference to people hearing shots fired. The investigation determined the shooting took place outside a house in the 1300 block of West College Boulevard. Witnesses described a party taking place at the house and two males fighting outside in front of the house. Witnesses described one of the males pulling out a gun and shooting at the other male.
In the ensuing activity, four people were shot. The victims – all men, ages 18, 20, 20 and 21 – were driven by others in private vehicles to local hospitals. Three of the victims suffered what were believed to be non-life-threatening wounds. One had a gunshot wound to his hand, one a wound to his arm and one a wound to his hip. The fourth victim had a gunshot wound to his chest. On Jan. 7, he was listed in stable condition as he continued to recover.
The investigation led to the arrest of Isaac Ray Chavez Jr, 22, of Roswell. He is charged with aggravated battery, aggravated assault and felon in possession of a firearm. As the investigation continues, the possibility exists Chavez could face additional charges.
RPD detectives believe Chavez may not have been the only shooter. They are asking anyone with potential information that could help identify additional suspects possibly involved in this shooting to contact the Roswell Police Department at (575) 624-6770 or Chaves County Crime Stoppers at 1-888-594-TIPS(8477).
