In early February, 9-year-old Aijah Orona, accompanied by her mother, Veronica Carranza, surprised the Roswell Police Department with several “care packs” she delivered to the police station. Her goal was to share some of her toys with other children who may not be able to otherwise have all the toys she has been able to enjoy.

The idea for the “care packs” came to Aijah as she was cleaning out toys she no longer played with. She told her mother she really wanted the toys to go to other children who may not have the opportunity to have such things, or to use the toys to turn a possible bad situation into a better one.

Aijah then took it a step further. Upon noticing several book bags and backpacks she had and was not using, she decided to make “care packs.” She filled each bag with a few toys, mittens, knit hat, coloring book and drink bottle. And for an extra special touch, each contained a drawing Aijah made herself in hopes it would bring a smile to a child that just may need one that day.

Along with the bags, Aijah also brought numerous stuffed animals and toys that could be carried by patrol officers in their units to provide to children they may come in contact with.   

Aijah’s mom Veronica contacted RPD Capt. Michael Taylor and told him of her daughter’s desire to help other children. Taylor was very impressed with the idea Aijah had come up with. He says there are times children are brought to the Police Department for various reasons and often those instances can be unsettling or confusing times for them. Taylor believes these “care packs” could hopefully turn a frown into a smile for some of these children and show them that another young child in their community truly cares.
