[ARCHIVED] Sprinkler systems, fire alarms key to fire suppression

A fire at a local commercial building demonstrated the importance of such buildings having and maintaining properly-functioning fire-suppression sprinkler systems, as well as fire alarms that provide immediate notification to the fire department.

The Roswell Fire Department’s Fire Marshal’s Office is taking this opportunity to inform owners of commercial buildings and similar structures that proper equipment can make a big difference in the chances a building has to survive a fire with limited damage.

RFD crews responded to the Snazzy Pig restaurant building in reference to a fire alarm that indicated water flow had been initiated in the fire sprinkler system. Firefighters found a ceiling light had malfunctioned, sparking sofas and chairs stacked under the light to catch fire.

The sprinkler system had activated one sprinkler head and extinguished the fire. Meanwhile, because the fire alarm notified emergency responders immediately, firefighters were able to arrive quickly, make sure the fire was extinguished and turn off the sprinkler system to prevent further water damage.

Fire Marshal Matt Miller believes that had the functioning sprinkler system not been in place, the fire could have easily severely damaged or destroyed the building. He adds that while sprinkler systems and fire alarms can be expensive, the investment is worthwhile for even just one time they are needed.

Miller welcomes anyone with questions about fire-suppression sprinkler systems and fire alarms to contact him at (575) 624-6830 or m.miller@roswell-nm.gov.
