[ARCHIVED] RPD SWAT Team does well in competition

SWAT competition 1

Members of the Roswell Police Department SWAT Team competed in late September in the Texas Tactical Police Officers Association's SWAT competition in Conroe, Texas. Participating in the Sept. 26-29 event were 26 teams from Texas, Florida, Louisiana, and even Ukraine. Roswell was the only department from New Mexico, and the smallest department, competing in the competition.

The competition consisted of eight events over the four days with most events focusing on physical fitness and shooting skills. The Roswell SWAT Team finished 15th overall, beating some much larger departments such as El Paso and Waco in Texas, Orange County, Fla., and Lafayette, La. RPD members turned in a great performance in the Sniper contest, in which they placed ninth and beat San Antonio, Texas, the team that would eventually win the overall four-day competition. RPD also did well in the Obstacle Course, placing eighth by beating 18 other teams.

The Roswell SWAT members who attended this competition are Trong Nguyen, Alex Barleen, Skye Wentland, Scott Wrenn, Brandon Stroud and Nars Santillan. Those who competed in this competition dedicated every Friday to prepare during the two months leading up to the event. They went out on their own time to practice shooting drills, repelling and physical fitness to make sure they were ready to compete.
