[ARCHIVED] New Library Reading Program

Ready to Read (1)

The Roswell Public Library has a new reading program starting this week. The Ready to Read/Ready to Learn initiative aims to help children reach developmental milestones in their early years to better prepare them for school.

A parent is not only the most important person in a child’s life but often a child’s first teacher. The library’s reading program is designed to inspire parents to read out loud to their children while recording their progress. The Ready to Read program’s overall goal is to have a parent and child read 350 books each year. The more books a parent and child read together, a child earns an e-badge and is then eligible for prizes.

The Ready to Learn program offers more specific exercises for children that help parents introduce important fundamental skills such as cognition and general knowledge, social and emotional development, approaches to learning, language and literacy, as well as physical and health development. Each of these milestones is a significant predictor of a child’s ability to do well in school. The Ready to Learn program is divided into four age groups: birth to 18 months, 2 to 3 years, 3 to 4 years, and 4 years and older.
