As the sun rises, so does Sean Lee, starting his day by making the trip he makes many weekday mornings. He heads to the Roswell Recreation and Aquatic Center, where he can get a workout in the fitness room that has been adding to its number and variety of exercise equipment options since last summer.
Lee is a regular at the center, usually arriving around 6 a.m. when the facility opens each weekday. On some mornings Lee may hit the pool for some swimming while other days he heads to the growing number of exercise choices in the fitness room.
“It’s a beautiful facility. It’s what Roswell has needed for a long time,” Lee says of the Recreation and Aquatic Center that opened in June 2019. Lee has found the fitness room “tremendously helpful” and “therapeutic” since undergoing chemotherapy last year following a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which has since gone into remission.
Getting on a treadmill in the fitness room on a regular basis is among the physical activities Lee says have helped mitigate the negative side effects of the chemo treatments he went through last year. He appreciates having a state-of-the-art facility in which to exercise.
“I’ve really enjoyed it,” Lee says, adding he believes the facility is also “attractive to newcomers.”
Whether someone is a longtime Roswell resident or only recently arrived in town or is just visiting, the fitness room at the Recreation and Aquatic Center (1402 W. College Blvd.) offers plenty of options for a variety of exercises designed to promote muscle building, flexibility and cardio health. Whether someone is looking to work out on a treadmill, elliptical, bench/squat apparatus or rowing machine, or maybe use free weights, a fitness ball, strength rope, aerobic step, jump rope or yoga mat, the fitness room is equipped for everyone, including those who may be unfamiliar with the different machines and what can be done on them. The machines have instructions on them to guide a user who wants to try everything from a pec fly, lateral raise or glute kick to a triceps pushdown, lunge or side bend. Information about the machines and other equipment in the fitness room is available here.
The fitness room is also home to LesMills Virtual Fitness classes, which are shown throughout the day. For descriptions and schedules of specific classes, click here.
Use of the fitness room can be had by purchasing one of the numerous recreation or recreation/aquatic memberships offered by the Recreation and Aquatic Center. People can also pay for individual visits to the fitness room for $5 (plus tax) or purchase a punch card for a minimum of 10 visits at a cost of $4 (plus tax) per visit. A complete list of pricing options is found here.
The Recreation and Aquatic Center is open Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday noon to 6 p.m.
